Forbes: How To Clean A Water Filter Pitcher (And Why It’s So Important)

It’s easy to overlook the need to wash your water filter pitcher when you’re only ever filling it up with water. After all, how dirty can it get? But just like reusable water bottles, pitchers can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which is why it’s imperative to give them thorough, regular cleanings. If you skip this necessary maintenance, that pretty much defeats the purpose of using a filtered pitcher in the first place. These household items are designed to supply you with cleaner, purer drinking water—not H2O that’s teeming with mold or biofilm.

“It’s important to clean your water pitcher reservoir with soap and water to remove any unwanted germs or bacteria,” says registered dietitian and nutritionist Maya Feller. “Clean the reservoir regularly and specifically if you notice any debris or buildup on the interior of the pitcher.” Because even though filters are designed to remove heavy metals and chemicals from your drinking water, they can’t block bacteria, mold and algae from flourishing within the reservoir. While you should follow any specific cleaning instructions from your pitcher’s manufacturer, here are some general maintenance tips to keep germs at bay.
