Intentional Shopping …and A Surprise Announcement

People have asked about my shopping habits and my criteria for choosing restaurants I support. I am happy to share my process, but I also want to remind you that these habits differ for everyone. They are based on personal history, upbringing, discovery, and intentionality. Having choices right in my immediate community and adequate resources is also a privilege.

I was part of a CSA (community-supported agriculture) for years and loved supporting the organization and bringing on new members. When I moved neighborhoods, I even drove back to my previous neighborhood for months to pick up my weekly share. I then joined the Park Slope Food Co-op and was a loyal member for years. When the pandemic hit, my shopping routine changed.

I have loved grocery and farmer’s market shopping for years. These days I do a combination of a weekly saturday shop at my local farmers market followed by a trip to a grocery store–either Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I buy fresh, frozen, boxed, jarred, and canned goods with weeknight dinners, breakfasts, and school snacks in mind. I choose specific foods based on the likes and dislikes of the people in the house while trying to expand their pallets.

When it comes to shopping outside of food, I usually learn about places from friends and take those recommendations as a suggestion to try a place. I’m also always curious about new local spots.
